| Field Trips Celebrating American Wetlands Month 2011 |
![]() New River Birding & Nature Center May 2011 120 junior high students from two area schools experienced the wonders of the outdoor classroom at our Wetlands Boardwalk, and up-close looks at the dynamics of wetlands that are so important to people and wildlife. Students learned that wetlands help slow floodwaters and because they improve downstream water quality through absorbing excess nutrients, sediment, and other pollutants are often referred to as the “kidneys” of the landscape; and that wetlands also provide critical habitat for thousands of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals, as well as nesting sites, resting and feeding stops for migrating birds during their cross-continental journeys. Many of the students were in the woods for the first time. We appreciate the educational opportunity and look forward to future outdoor education school field trips.
