New River Birding & Nature Center Bird Banding, Boardwalk & Botanizing
Saturday, July 9 8 - Noon All "Second Saturday" events are FREE Admission, made possible by the non-profit Fayette County Education Fund ~ Donations are welcome.
Search the wonders of a 15-acre wetland and complete construction on the Wetlands Boardwalk! Join consulting director Bill Hilton Jr. of the New River Birding & Nature Center for bird banding and botanizing.
The wetland is a living laboratory, so we'll also trim back the shrubs, vines, and herbaceous plants that try to take over the boardwalk during the summer growing season.
We'll do some nature exploration and finishing touches of a 12-foot extension "teaching platform" on the 275-foot Wetlands Boardwalk.
Bring your camera, work gloves, hammer, pruning shears, and filled water bottle if you have them. We'll have binoculars you can borrow if you don't have your own.
The New River Birding & Nature Center and Wetlands Boardwalk are part of Wolf Creek Park, located near the intersection of Appalachian Drive and SR-16, just off of US-19. Enter Wolf Creek Park via Nick Rahall Greenway; pass Bridge Brew Works, the steel building on the left; turn left down the graveled road to the Wetlands Boardwalk.

Field Trips Celebrating American Wetlands Month 2011 |
|
New River Birding & Nature Center
May 2011
120 junior high students from two area schools experienced the wonders of the outdoor classroom at our Wetlands Boardwalk, and up-close looks at the dynamics of wetlands that are so important to people and wildlife.
Students learned that wetlands help slow floodwaters and because they improve downstream water quality through absorbing excess nutrients, sediment, and other pollutants are often referred to as the “kidneys” of the landscape; and that wetlands also provide critical habitat for thousands of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals, as well as nesting sites, resting and feeding stops for migrating birds during their cross-continental journeys.
Many of the students were in the woods for the first time. We appreciate the educational opportunity and look forward to future outdoor education school field trips.
